Sydney FOX
Rank: Private
Number: 4833
Unit: 20th Battalion ROYAL FUSILIERS
Date of Death: 20 July 1916
Age: 21
Cemetery: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

The Fox family originated from Derbyshire and John and Elizabeth's first three children were born there. Just prior to 1885, they moved to Manchester, taking up residence in the Ancoats district. They had probably moved in connection with John's trade as a hairdresser. Two more children would be born there before Sydney's birth in about 1895. It is not known when they moved to the Heaton Chapel area of Stockport but the family was living at 2 Lawton Road in 1914 (and later at No. 14).

Nothing is known of Sydney's early life but his early enlistment into the 20th Battalion - known as one of the Regiment's "Public School" Battalions suggests that his family life was in keeping with the middle classes of the time. He will have gone overseas with the Battalion In November 1915 and was killed in the attack described here.
