George was born in 1888 in the Ardwick district of Manchester, the third child of John and Harriett. The family had moved to the Heaton Chapel area after their fourth child, William, was born in about 1895. At the time of the 1901 Census, they were living at 18 Elms Road, Heaton Chapel and were still there in 1914.

Nothing else is known of his private life or, indeed, of his military service. His name is inscribed on the Heaton Moor War Memorial and, also, the main town Memorial at Stockport Art Gallery. In the latter case, it is amongst those who served with the Royal Navy or the Marines. However, although the death in 1916 of his brother, William, is well documented, no trace has been found of George’s military service. There is no record of his death either abroad or in England or Wales.
