Other than his inscription on the Bredbury War Memorial, which confirmed his service with the Marines, nothing has been discovered about George. The Tatarrax was a defensively armed tanker which had been built in 1914. On 10 August 1918, she was carrying a cargo of benzole in a convoy between Port Said and Alexandria. She was torpedoed by the German submarine UC34, off Rosetta in Egypt and sank with the loss of the whole crew. Most of them were asian merchant seamen and they are commemorated on a Memorial in Hong Kong. The Captain, Mate, three Royal Navy ratings, another marine and George are commemorated on UK memorials.
