All that is known about James Ashton is that Regimental records, published after the War, indicate he was born in the parish of St Mary’s C of E Church, Stockport and that he enlisted into the army in the town. His service number indicates he joined up in late August or early September 1914. He probably joined the 2nd Battalion, after training, in the early spring of 1915. He was killed during a German attack described here.
