Stanley was the only son of John and Hannah Collier, Denby Lane, Heaton Chapel. The 1901 Census recorded John, then aged 29, as living in Heaton Norris and working as a master plasterer. Hannah was aged 31.

Stanley is believed to have been in training before going on active service. He died at Salford Royal Hospital after an operation. Details are unknown. He was buried with full military honours.

When the War Graves Commission was collating casualty information in the 1920s, John and Hannah had become licensees of the Jolly Sailor Hotel, Bramhall Lane, Stockport.
