Enoch Dennis HODKINSON
Rank: Warrant Telegraphist
Number:
Unit: HMS Tarlair ROYAL NAVY RESERVE
Date of Death: 14 November 1918
Age: 22
Cemetery: Southern Cemetery, Manchester

Dennis Hodkinson was the son of Enoch and Elizabeth and had been born in the Manchester suburb of Blackley. When the census was taken in 1901, the family was living at “Ingle Nook”, Westbourne Park, Urmston. Enoch was a successful travelling salesman and his income allowed the family to employ a live-in general servant. Dennis was the youngest of the couple’s five children. It is not known when they moved to the Stockport area but, in the early 1920s, they were at 5 Sutton Road, Heaton Norris.

HMS Tarlair was a shore-based naval establishment at Aberdour on the Firth of Forth. It’s most notable work was the development of hydrophonics as an anti-submarine measure. As far as can be established, Dennis died of natural causes – possibly as a result of the flu pandemic which claimed millions of lives worldwide in the autumn of 1918.
